Approximate number of copies printed: 2725.

States: (as described) 4.1.
4.2: in 1573L in SW Spain "Cap de Vincente" changed [incorrectly] into "Cap de Tincente". The sea receives much heavier, irregular stippling, whereas it had regular vertical stippling before. Also, the frame around the cartouche receives heavy vertical hachuring at the bottom, and light hachuring at the top. Curiously, its successor, plate 5, correctly has "Cap de Vincente" again. Yet I found a 1580/1589G copy in state 1.
4.3: in 1580 Cogerbela, North of Uppsala in Sweden was changed into Gogerbela. In Ort5, we find again Cogerbela. On Cyprus, Cermes was changed into Cervies.

Cartographic sources: Gerard Mercator's 1554 map of Europe. Greenland from Mercator's 1569 world map. Both these maps for Iceland. Great Britain after Mercator's 1564 Great Britain map. Scandinavia from Olaus Magnus' 1539 Scandinavia map. Russia is based on Jenkinson's 1562 Russia map. The South Eastern part of this map based on Gastaldi's first map of Asia of 1559. Parts of the North African coast are based on Gastaldi's Africa map of 1564. (Meurer p. 36, Karrow 56/13, and 53/1 p. 386, 363). Ortelius himself mentions in his Catalogus Auctorum also the Europa maps of Apianus, Cornelius Antonii of Frankfurt, Ioannes Bucius Ænicola of Paris, Jacob Homem Lusitanus printed in Venice, Ioannes Dominicus Methoneus of Venice, Nicolaus Nicolay printed in Antwerp by Ioannes Stelsium, and further Vopelius, Waldseemüller, and Christoph Zell of Nurnberg.

Remarks: This plate was replaced in 1584L by plate Ort 5, which has cursive capitals "AFRICÆ PARS" in the Africa area.
