Cartographica Neerlandica Background for Ortelius Map No. 144

Title: ILLYRICVM. (Cartouche in bottom right with 12 lines of text:) IOAN. SAMBVCVS | ORTELIO SVO S. | "Mitto hanc quoque tabellam qua | neceßaria confinia Pannoniæ de:|clarantur, fluuiorum & aliquot lo:|corum situs, Hirschvogelij recte | mutaui, Angelini autem studio | plurima adieci, et interualla cor:|rexi, vt parum quis si cum Hirsch:|vogelij hæc coniungat desiderarit, | si qui errores sint, dies certiora do:|cebit, Viennæ, Vale, 25 October 1572". [Ioannes Sambucus greets his friend Ortelius. I also send a modest representation in which the necessary boundaries of Pannonia are being described, as well as the location of rivers and some places. Those provided by Hirschvogel I have changed and to those of Angelinus I have added some, and I have corrected some distances so that, when they are compared to those of Hirschvogel, which contain some mistakes, he can get to know the truth with greater certainty. 144.2: From 1587F onwards, stippling on "Sinus Hadriaticus" and lake "Balaton". Also, shading on "Danubius flu.", Sava flu." and "Drava flu." strengthened. The river name "Drier" (middle left B2) was changed into "Driet".
144.3: Between 1592 and 1595, the place name "Karlstatt" was added just above and slightly to the left of the C of CROVA:TIA.
Next to that, as Gròf notes, the plate shows progressive damage:
In 1579L(B) a 9 mm crack appears through the left hand frame, third square below the 45 degree mark. In 1584L traces of repair at place just mentioned, and nine squares above 45 degree mark. In 1592L rivet marks are visible on the crack mentioned for 1579L, which is now 12 mm. In 1602S lower crack extends to 19 mm, the upper crack becomes more prominent. In 1598F a third crack appears between squares 10 and 11 in the left hand frame, and a fourth crack shows up in the right hand margin, just below "..aliquot lo:" in the cartouche in 1609/1612L and 1609/1612/1641S.

Note: in 1574L, 1575L, 1579L, 1580/1589G, 1584L, 1588S, 1592L, 1595L, 1602S, 1603L, 1608/1612I, 1609/1612L and 1609/1612/1641S this map receives the text previously given to Ort 145, whereas the short text for Ort 144 moves to Ort 145. Thus, as regards texts, which are about identical, Ort 144 and 145 are in complementary distribution. When one has the short text version, the other has the long one.
