First Facsimile of Waghenaers' Atlas.
This is the first real size facsimile of Waghenaer’s Spieghel der Zeevaerdt published.
It was initiated by Koeman in 1964 and published by Sequoia Elsevier.
The source for this facsimile was the colored copy of the 1584 Spieghel der Zeevaerdt as it resides in the University Library of Utrecht, an exceptionally beautiful copy, complete with all text. The facsimile is in very expressive, superb colour. In contrast to the uncolored TOT facsimile, this facsimile is very rare.
This facsimile is bound in artificial leather, fits into its own slipcase and apart from some minor foxing of the back cover, it is in mint condition.
It is accompanied by a 72 page booklet written by Koeman, discussing maritime cartography before 1584, the life of Waghenaer, the origin of his charts, the first edition of his Spieghel der Zeevaerdt facsimilised here, later editions and is concluded by a Bibliography.
