In mediis stagnis est." [Maguelone is the seat and church of the bishop of Monspesselien. It was once his bishop see and is called the bishopric of Maguelone. Identification: Ort 49a-c (Koeman/Meurer 108a-c, Karrow: 1/19a, 1/20a, 1/141)

Title 49a: Gallia Narbonensis

Scale: 1 : 1,000,000. Size: 145 x 227 mm.

Identification number: Ort 49a (Koeman/Meurer: 108a, Karrow: 1/19a, van der Krogt AN: 4652:31B).

States: 49a.1 as described;
49a.2: between 1589 and 1592, horizontal hachuring along the coastline was extended from 3 to 5 mm; lines on the sails of the ship first running from upper left to lower right now superimposed with new engraving running from lower left to upper right;

Cartographic sources: Carolus Clusius or Charles de l'Écluse (1526-1609) drew a manuscript map of this area for Ortelius (Meurer p. 127-129, Karrow 26/I p. 160-161). This is a reduced copy of plate 48a, where this map was half sheet size. Now, it is less than a quarter sheet.

Title 49b: Sabaudię

Scale: 1 : 1,300,000. Size: 200 x 227 mm.

Identification number: Ort 49b (Koeman/Meurer: 108b, Karrow: 1/20a, van der Krogt AN: 4760:31B).

States: 49b.1 as described;
49b.2: between 1589 and 1592, horizontal hachuring added to Northern coast of Lac Leman.

Cartographic sources: Gilles Boileau de Bouillon (1510-1563) made a 2-sheet map of Savoye which was published by Hieronymus Cock in 1556 (Karrow 12/20, p. 85-86, Meurer p. 116). This is a reduced copy of plate 48b, which is half sheet and also features Burgundy.

Title 49c: Venuxini

Scale: 1 : 250,000. Size: 354 x 230 mm

Identification number: Ort 49c (Koeman/Meurer: 108c, Karrow: 1/141, van der Krogt AN: 4740:31B).

States: 49c.1 as described;
49c.2: between 1589 and 1592, hachuring from upper left to lower right superimposed on mile scale middle left, which already had hachuring from lower right to upper left.

Cartographic sources: Stefano Ghebellino whose map of Venaissin appeared in 1574 (Meurer p. 156).

Remarks: Ort 49a is a reduced version of Ort 48a and some corrections have been made. The marshes along the coast are now called "Volcarum stagna" whereas they were called "stagna" on the earlier version.
